Silas Soule: Colorado Hero

group of Sand Creek Indians and Silas Soule

Underground railroad conductor, guerilla abolitionist, jail breaker, and brave soldier, Captain Silas Soule, stood up to his commanding officer, Colonel Chivington, and refused to follow the order to attack the peaceful settlement of women, children, and elderly people at Sand Creek, on November 29, 1864. Despite promising to personally shoot any man in his regiment who joined the attack and trying to stand between the onslaught and the victims, over 230 innocent Cheyenne and Arapaho were brutally murdered by the Colorado First, making it the bloodiest day in Colorado History.

Horrified by the atrocity, Silas Soule bravely testified against his commanding officer, an act which led to his ambush and murder on April 23, 1865.
